East Main Street, Buda’s primary commercial road east of the I-35, currently allows two-way traffic on a single lane in each direction with one center turn lane. Congestion on the road has increased as the city has grown due to the configuration, according to a city of Buda news release.
Buda was awarded $10.48 million in federal transportation funding through the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, or CAMPO, to reconstruct East Main Street between I-35 and Firecracker Drive.
The overview
The future East Main Street reconstruction project will expand the roadway to a four-lane corridor with a raised median and dedicated left-turn lanes. The project will include a 10-foot shared-use path on both sides of the road to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists, according to the release.
The city will provide a grant match of $2.62 million, bringing the total project budget to $13.1 million. The funding will be available to Buda in 2029, according to the release.
“Securing this competitive funding from CAMPO is a significant achievement for Buda,” Mayor Lee Urbanovsky said in the release. “This award reflects years of planning and helps us move a critical east-side mobility project closer to construction.”
The project will include upgraded stormwater infrastructure and on-site water quality treatment as well, according to the release.
A closer look
East Main Street provides primary access to the Sunfield master-planned community. The community has more than 5,800 planned residential lots east of Firecracker Drive, according to the release.
The project will improve access for commuters, local businesses and school buses. The Sunfield developer plans to expand East Main Street from Firecracker Drive to the east, according to the release.
Looking back
While the city pursued full funding for the project, staff utilized a phased approach to the road’s congestion. In April 2025, crews finished adding a dedicated right-turn lane from westbound Main Street onto the northbound I-35 frontage road, according to the release.
