Oct. 15 | Halloween movie at the lake
Kick off spooky season with a Halloween movie at Lake Kyle. This is the first of two city-hosted Halloween events for the community. The event is free and open to the public. Oct. 16 | Cookout in Kyle
Head to Plum Creek in Kyle for a day of races and barbecue at Hootenanny on the Hill. The races range from 1K to 10K and take place in the morning. The afternoon and evening will feature a local vendor fair and a cookout contest outside the Plum Creek Community Center. Oct. 17 | Venture to Middle Earth
The San Marcos Artists’ Retention and Training Orchestra will kick off its 13th season in Middle Earth. The orchestra will perform Johan De Meij’s “Symphony No. 1 The Lord of the Rings.” The performance will feature five movements, each of which illustrates an important person or event from the book, such as Gandalf, Lothlórien, the Hobbits and Gollum. 3 p.m. Free. Oct. 22 Through 23 | Free festival for all
SM Fest will host its sixth annual two-day music festival downtown. The festival generally features bands from San Marcos and the surrounding areas and is also host to local vendors and art booths. Oct. 23 | Picnic in the cemetery
The Heritage Association of San Marcos will host a Halloween picnic for families, and children of all ages can join the festivities. Mary Kyle Hartson City Square Park Trick-or-Treat in the parkBuda City Park Ghosts and goblins are invited to the Kyle Center Street Trick-or-Treat, an effort by the city to provide a free, safe opportunity to celebrate Halloween. A Treat Trail will be set up by local businesses and vendors in the park to give out candy. Prizes will be given away to the winners of the costume contest and the pumpkin decorating contest. Sit back and experience the mystery and murder in the Texas State Theatre and Dance Production of “Yellow Inn.” Written by South Korean playwright Lee Kang-baek and directed by Yong-Suk Yoo of Texas State, watch the play about sisters running a cursed inn and the array of murders of all its tenants that take place in the building. $10 (students), $20 (adults). Tiff’s Treats, in partnership with a member of the ChadTough Defeat DIPG Foundation, will host a Tiffwich Block Party that will feature ice cream sandwiches, music, games and giveaways. Oct. 30 | Trick-or-treat in the park
Boo-da Halloween will be returning to the Buda city park for its annual trick-or-treat event. Local businesses and organizations will set up throughout to hand out candy and provide free entertainment. The Buda Public Library will also provide crafts and games for children and read aloud spooky stories. There will also be a Halloween movie to follow the trick-or-treat festivities. 4-7 p.m. Free. Nov. 06 | Honor veterans
The Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee and other local veterans’ organizations in partnership with the city of San Marcos are hosting this year’s Veterans Day Parade. Kids age 5 and older can bring their bikes, scooters and tricycles to decorate and ride in the procession. The event is free.
