Texas receives 10th consecutive Site Selection Magazine Governor's Cup for record-breaking development

Gov.Greg Abbott held a press conference at the Governor’s Mansion on March 1 to announce Texas’ 10th consecutive Governor’s Cup win, awarded by Site Selection Magazine. The Governor's Cup is awarded to the state with the most qualified capital investment projects in the previous calendar year, according to Site Selection.

“I’m honored to accept this incredible award, the Governor's Cup. I accept it on behalf of the people across the entire state of Texas,” Abbott said. “I’m proud to say that every year I’ve been governor, Texas has received the Governor’s Cup because of what we’ve been able to achieve with regard to economic growth and economic expansion.”

The year in question for the Cup, 2021, was a record-breaking year for Texas’ economic development, Abbot said, citing a record-breaking number of capital investments and new jobs as well as the most corporate headquarters relocations to the state.

The growth and investment Texas experienced in the past year points to one of the largest economies in the world that supports both large and small businesses, the governor said.

The governor cited some diversification of businesses, including the $17 billion Samsung semiconductor fabrication plant in Taylor and Tesla’s headquarters relocation to Austin, and overall expansion in the state.

“Our goal is to work every day to ensure that every business that comes here, that expands here or that has been here from the beginning is going to have an economic support from the state that will continue to promote their growth, which will, in turn, continue to promote the economic growth of our great state,” Abbott said.

He added he wants to ensure there is focus on spreading prosperity across the entire state from large metropolitan areas such as Austin, Dallas and Houston to smaller and midsize communities.

“Bottom line is this: Texas is far more than just a state. It has turned into an economic juggernaut. And it’s because of the people who work here and who call Texas Home. And this award belongs to them,” Abbott said. “Here’s to many more years of economic development in the great state of Texas."
