Cooling centers open across San Antonio amid 100-plus-degree weather

Bexar County said it is operating seven public cooling centers from noon-9 p.m. daily through June 10, including Emergency Services District No. 3, 23103 Bulverde Road, and ESD No. 8, 20825 Babcock Road.

Water and light snacks will be available at the county cooling centers. The county said it is working with Meals on Wheels to check with residents in unincorporated Bexar County and suburban cities.

City and county officials said they are providing tips for keeping residents and pets safe during the extreme heat, including drinking plenty of water; checking on elderly individuals, children, disabled individuals, ill individuals and at-risk individuals; and being on the lookout for signs of heat cramps, heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

A city news release reminds the public that fresh water and shelter should always be available for pets, and no children or pets should be left inside a hot car or in the back of a truck.

The Bexar County Fire Marshal’s office reminds residents that the county is still under a burn ban. Outdoor burning is not recommended at all. With dry winds forecast through the weekend, a simple spark can ignite a grassfire. All residents are reminded to be to be diligent and careful to avoid any activities that may spark a fire.
