As of Dec. 8 filing deadline, the March 3, 2026, Democratic and Republican primary elections have taken the next step, with multiple county races up for contention, including the Bexar County judge.

What’s on the ballot

Candidates on the ballot include the Bexar County judge, precinct commissioner and county court at law. According to the Texas Secretary of State website, no Independent, Libertarian or Green Party candidates filed for primaries.

For Bexar County judge in Democratic primary elections, former Mayor Ron Nirenberg, now professor in practice at Trinity University’s communications department, and incumbent Peter Sakai are both filed as candidates.

In the Republican primary, Patrick Von Dohlen is the lone candidate for Bexar County judge.


For the commissioner positions, incumbent Justin Rodriguez is running for Precinct 2 commissioner, and incumbent Tommy Calvert Jr. is running for Precinct 4 commissioner in the Democratic primary election. David Sherwood Hill is the sole Republican candidate for Precinct 2 commissioner.

For Bexar County district clerk, Elva Abundis Esparza, Monica Ramirez Alcantara, Christine “Chris” Castillo and Gloria A. Martinez are running in the Democratic primary. Lucy Adame-Clark, Mari Sanchez Belew and Cynthia Castro are running for Bexar County clerk in the Democratic primary.

What else?

For county court at law, the Democratic primary elections have five races in contention, including Bexar County judge No. 8, No. 9, No. 10, No. 12 and No. 14. The Republican primary races have no contested races.


Victoria Cruz and Cleophus “Cleo” Marshall III are running for the county court at law No. 8 position. Jessica A. Gonzalez, Lizz Lane and Maritza Perez-Stewart are running for county court at law No. 9. Adam Flores, Cesar Garcia and Shannon Roberta Salmon are running for county court at law No. 10. Yolanda Huff and Lauren Zamora are running for county court at law No. 12, and Carlo Rodriguez Key and Audrey Martinez are running for county court at law No. 14.

In the uncontested Democratic races, Helen Petry Stowe is the sole candidate for county court at law No. 1, Melissa Saenz is the candidate for county court at law No. 2, David J. Rodriguez is the candidate for county court at law No. 3, Alfredo Ximenez is the candidate for county court at law No. 4, Andrea Arevalos is the candidate for county court at law No. 5, Erica Dominguez is the candidate for county court at law No. 6, Melanie M. Lira is the candidate for county court at law No. 7, Erica Pena is the candidate for county court at law No. 11, Rosie Speedlin Gonzalez is the candidate for county court at law No. 13 and Melissa Vara is the candidate for county court at law No. 15.

Five candidates are uncontested in the Republican county court at law races. Bob Behrens is running for county court at law No. 1, Jason Roland Garrahan is running for county court at law No. 4, Celeste Brown is running for county court at law No. 8, Daphne Previti Austin is running for county court at law No. 9, and Deborah Dietzmann is running for county court at law No. 12.

Next steps


The first day for voters to submit an application for a ballot by mail for the March 3 election is Jan. 1, according to the Secretary of State website.

The last day for voter registration is Feb. 2, with early voting beginning Feb. 17.
