Want to learn how to maintain historic homes and places in San Antonio? The city of San Antonio Office of Historic Preservation, or OHP, is holding a series of training and classes for contractors, real estate agents and community members this fall.

Historic House Specialist—City Resources & Processes

Part of the Trainings for the Public & Real Estate Agents Series, attendees will learn about the design review process and resources. The course will discuss the terminology of architectural styles and give context about different districts.Cemetery Steward Workshop

Part of the Cemetery Steward Program Series, OHP and the Parks & Recreation Department will train volunteers in hands-on cemetery conservation and documentation at the historic east-side cemeteries. Attendees will learn how to survey cemetery resources, complete conditions assessments, and clean cemetery monuments and markers. Attendees must register online with the Parks & Recreation Department prior to attendance.Preservation Academy: Historic Preservation 101

As part of the Preservation Academy Series, attendees will learn about San Antonio’s Historic Preservation Program, why preservation is important and the community benefits it offers. Cory Edwards, deputy historic preservation officer, will teach attendees about a variety of preservation tools and programs used by the city.Living Heritage Trades Academy: Wood Windows Restoration Cohort


Part of the Trainings for Contractors Series, the Living Heritage Trades Academy, LHTA, will give attendees hands-on training in building trades through classroom instruction, on-site learning and paid apprenticeships. Training will focus on pre-1960 construction methods and materials, such as wood window repair, deconstruction and preservation carpentry.Historic House Specialist: Preservation in Action Tour

As a part of the Training for the Public & Real Estate Agents Series, real estate agents will be able to watch a live Historic & Design Review Commission meeting to gain insight on the commission proceedings. A part of the Trainings for the Public & Real Estate Agents Series, the class will discuss the Vacant Building Program. The class will go over the program’s role in addressing vacant properties, how to enhance public safety, and how to promote economic development. The class will discuss the registration process, maintenance requirements and recent program updates. Attendees can register online.Deconstruction Training

A part of the Trainings for Contractors Series, the class will offer hands-on deconstruction training where attendees learn about deconstruction and techniques for material salvage. Attendees must register prior to attending. To begin, interested applicants must fill out a short interest form.
