Northside ISD is seeking applicants for the vacant single-member District 2 school board seat now through 5 p.m. April 17.

The background

District 2 board trustee Gerald Lopez informed his NISD colleagues March 26 that he would be leaving his current elected position to be sworn in as a District 5 trustee with the Alamo Colleges District board.

Because Lopez was the lone person to file for ACD District 5 ahead of the local May 4 elections, ACD officials are certifying Lopez as unopposed and preparing for him to take office in May.

A closer look

Northside ISD board voted April 2 to fill Lopez's upcoming vacancy by appointment until the next trustee election, May 2025.

NISD officials said the school board expects to review applications, conduct interviews and make an appointment to the District 2 post by the end of May.

Lopez was first elected to the NISD board in 2015 and re-elected in 2019 and 2023. He is the current board secretary and previously served as vice president.

NISD is the biggest public school district in Bexar County and one of the largest in Texas. District 2 is bound by Loop 1604 and covers portions of SH 151 and Loop 410, and includes Holmes and Warren high schools.
