During its Oct. 16 meeting, the San Antonio City Council voted to award E-Z Bel Construction the contract to build the Huebner Creek to Medical Center Trail, which will stretch from Floyd Curl Drive to Eckert Road and connect with Phase 1 of the New Medical Center Area Park project.

In a nutshell

According to city documents, E-Z Bel Construction will construct a 1-mile, 12-foot-wide concrete trail that will connect to the New Medical Center Area Park. Known as the Huebner Creek Trail, it will provide walkable and bikeable access to the Huebner Creek Greenway for several nearby neighborhoods. Eventually, this trail network will connect to the Leon Creek Greenway Trail System.

Huebner Creek Trail amenities will include:
  • Greenway trail kiosks
  • Greenway shade structures
  • Monument signs
  • A pedestrian crossing at Babcock Road
  • ADA-compliant walkways
  • Pedestrian bridges
  • Scenic overlooks
  • Three low-water crossings
Additionally, the project will include trailheads at Floyd Curl Drive and Oakland Road, and another one near Babcock Road. According to city documents, the Babcock Road Trailhead will also include 39 parking spaces, a shade structure, a water fountain, lighting, signage, bike racks, trash receptacles, picnic tables and benches.

The project costs approximately $11.47 million and is estimated to begin this fall and be completed in summer 2027.

During the City Council meeting, District 8 council member Ivalis Meza Gonzalez said parks are one of the major concerns of her constituents, and expressed gratitude to city staff for their hard work.

“This is an $11 million investment in our parks and green spaces in District 7 and [District] 8. This is to include our Huebner Creek Greenway and our Medical Center Park, also known as Lisa Starr Park,” Gonzalez said. “I know we're all excited about this, residents always look forward [to further parks development] and everywhere I go [they] talk to me about our parks and green spaces, especially in District 8.”

The background

The new trail is part of the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trails System, which consists of over 102 miles of multiuse trails built along San Antonio waterways, according to city documents.

Part of the 17-acre New Medical Center Area Park, or the Lisa Starr Rosenstein Park & Huebner Creek Trailhead, the completed park will feature a playground, a trail overlook, native landscaping and green spaces.
