On June 21, the San Antonio Historic and Design Review Commission approved the design for a 10-story residential tower and adjacent retail spaces planned as part of the ongoing redevelopment of Hemisfair.

On June 7, HDRC approved the conceptual design for a Caribbean restaurant, also planned for the downtown park.

Mixed use project

According to a news release, Post Lake Capital Partners is partnering with the Hemisfair Park Area Redevelopment Corp. to build the multistory residential and retail structures on a 2.14-acre parcel along Market Street.

Hemisfair officials said the 10-story residential building will have ground-level retail space facing the soon-to-open Civic Park. There also will be a nearby three-story building with direct access to the River Walk, Civic Park and Market Street, featuring retail and food and beverage opportunities.

The developers previously pitched a 29-story residential and retail high-rise, but several neighboring residents and the Conservation Society of San Antonio argued the proposed height was inappropriate for the site.

Hemisfair officials said the first phase of Civic Park is scheduled to open in September with a full fall event calendar.

New restaurant

The design approved by HDRC on June 7 will be for Port Royal restaurant, the brainchild of Nicola Blaque, owner and chef of The Jerk Shack and Mi Roti, both of which focus on Caribbean cuisine.

According to a news release, Port Royal will occupy the former Schultze House, a 1,750-square-foot historically recreated home located near East Nueva Street.

Hemisfair officials said Port Royal will feature menu items available at the original Jerk Shack, and other dishes as well as a full bar and cocktail program.

Hemisfair officials said construction on Port Royal is slated to begin in fall 2023 and is projected to open summer 2024.
