On Jan. 16, New Braunfels-based developer Southstar acquired the Lone Star Brewery site located at 600 Lone Star Blvd. in San Antonio.

According to a news release, Southstar will transform the site into a mixed-use development that will preserve the former brewery’s unique history.
Led by Adolphus Busch, the Lone Star Brewery was first established in San Antonio in 1884, with a brewery on Jones Avenue in downtown San Antonio. By 1918, Lone Star was producing over 65,000 barrels of beer, according to the city of San Antonio’s Mission Trails website. The existing Lone Star Brewery site along Mission Road was built in 1933 and ceased operations in 1996. It was one of many industrial complexes built in the early 20th century, along with the Pioneer Flour Mills and the Blue Star Industrial District.
A closer look
Thad Rutherford, president and CEO of Southstar, said the development will provide San Antonians with new spaces to congregate and add to the city's large list of major development projects, including the forthcoming Sports and Entertainment District and VIA Metropolitan Transit’s transit-oriented development.
“Many passionate San Antonians have worked for years to protect and further the story of Lone Star. That work matters. We will build on it, nurture it and together create a new part of the Lone Star story,” Rutherford said in the release.
The backstory
Southstar was founded 26 years ago and is headquartered in New Braunfels. According to the release, Southstar has established multiple award-winning master planned communities, including VIDA, a 600-acre mixed-use development consisting of single-family homes, townhomes, duplexes and apartments.
