Area school districts and city offices close due to inclement weather

Judson ISD and Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD announced early Jan. 31 that schools and administrative offices would be closed for the day due to inclement weather across the region. After-school activities were also canceled, and city offices also announced closures and delayed openings.

“Overnight, the weather conditions have turned colder than expected,” Judson posted on social media. “We have made the decision to cancel classes today, January 31. This decision has been cautiously made to ensure that our staff and students are safe no matter how they travel to and from school.”

SCUC ISD posted on social media: “The 4 a.m. [The] National Weather Service broadcast indicates that the areas of icing concern continue to move southward. While the roads, bridges, and overpasses are clear at this point, there is concern about conditions worsening during the day and impacting travel later today.”

The National Weather Service issued an alert detailing ice up to half an inch thick on area roadways over northern portions of Bexar and Medina counties along with ice up to a quarter-inch thick on some roadways north of Loop 410 and south of Loop 1604.

The alert also encouraged those who must travel to keep a flashlight, food and water in vehicles in case of emergencies and for residents to prepare for possible power outages. The winter storm warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. Feb. 2.

Municipal offices for Schertz will remain closed on Jan. 31 including the Schertz Public Library, the Schertz Civic and Community centers, and the Schertz Senior Center. Trash service from Republic Services serving Schertz and Cibolo will remain as scheduled for Schertz residents, but Cibolo residents should expect delays in service by a couple of hours.

City offices in Cibolo were open on a delayed schedule beginning at 10 a.m. Jan. 31. Essential departments including the Cibolo Fire Department and Cibolo Police Department maintained regular working hours.

The Texas Department of Transportation also reported icy road conditions across the state, stating Jan. 31 is worse than the previous day, but that Feb. 1 is anticipated to be worse still. Road condition updates can be found at www.drivetexas.org.
