Saludos Cocina brings Mexico City flair to downtown New Braunfels
Tucked just north of the main square in downtown New Braunfels, Saludos Cocina has brought Mexican flavor to the city.
From tacos to sweet treats, the restaurant officially opened its doors to the public Feb. 2.
Saludos has taken over the historic Dittlinger building—located at 398 E. San Antonio St.—inviting patrons to savor recipes inspired by the vibrant culture of Mexico City, co-owner Israel Trevino said.
Saludos aims to broaden the palette of the New Braunfels community and offer a taste of a culture nearby residents might not have otherwise, Trevino said.

103 miles and counting: local officials work to expand San Antonio’s trail network
Stretching over 100 miles in a loop around the city, the Howard W. Peak Greenway has over 50 major trailheads, with links to local parks and approximately 1,600 acres of green space near creeks and natural areas.
District 9 council member Misty Spears said the greenway has revolutionized how San Antonians interact with their city.
“It’s one of the [greatest] quality of life investments we’ve been able to make for San Antonio, particularly in North San Antonio, to provide a safe place for recreation, unite neighborhoods and connect our communities with nature—all while protecting our drinking water supply by preserving land over the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone,” Spears said.
Kendall County governments, nonprofits work to build local mental health network
An estimated 18-21% of adults in Kendall County experience some form of mental health issue, according to data from Hill Country Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Centers.
With nearly 10,000 residents who may experience behavioral or mental health disorders, local nonprofits, municipal organizations, school districts and other community partners are working together to meet community needs by expanding mental health services and adding first responders focused on mental health cases.
While organizations come together to create a countywide mental health network, the county continues to be empty of long-term mental health care, leading residents to receive services in Bexar County or other locations outside of Kendall County.

New wedding and event venue opens in New Braunfels
A new event and wedding venue has opened for the 2026-2027 wedding season along the Comal River in New Braunfels.
Canopy on the Comal opened on Jan. 6 at 444 E. San Antonio St. and is now accepting reservations for the upcoming season, company officials confirmed in an email to Community Impact.
The venue is owned and operated by husband-and-wife duo Greg and Monique Weston. The Westons also oversee 444 Tubing Company, according to previous reporting from Community Impact.
Judson ISD to close 4 schools in the 2026-27 school year
Judson ISD has plans to close four schools in the 2026-27 school year to combat a $37 million budget shortfall.
In a 6-1 vote, the JISD board of trustees voted to close one middle school and three elementary schools during a special meeting Feb. 9. Trustees voted to approve Scenario 3, but will choose which campuses to close at another special meeting. Trustee José Macias Jr. was the single dissenting vote.
Four school-closure scenarios were presented to trustees.
