This animal rescue organization has changed its name but continues to help those in need throughout the Hill Country.

As of Jan. 1, the Hill Country SPCA changed its name to Hill Country Animal Rescue. The no-kill, private intake rescue is headquartered in Fredericksburg at 2981 S. Hwy. 16, but serves people and animals throughout the Hill Country.
Director Andrew Davis said the change was part of an effort to effectively communicate who the group is to the public.
“The name change was part of a broader effort to clearly communicate who we are and what we do,” Davis said in an email to Community Impact. “We wanted a name that leaves no confusion: what we do is rescue animals, and where we do it is the Texas Hill Country.”
The framework
Hill Country Animal Rescue was chartered as a nonprofit in 1997 and established its permanent headquarters and sanctuary in 2006, according to its website.
“We are a private, local nonprofit with no affiliation to any national organization, and we are funded entirely through private donations and grants,” Davis said.
The group hosts community adoption events, rescue and shelter services and more across the entire Hill Country. Residents across Kendall County, New Braunfels and Northern San Antonio and beyond can utilize these services or choose to volunteer their time at the rescue, according to Davis.
Looking ahead
In 2026, Davis said Hill Country Animal Rescue is working toward several goals.
“Our primary goals include expanding our lifesaving capacity, strengthening partnerships with local municipalities and rescue groups, enhancing our medical and behavioral rehabilitation programs, and continuing to improve our facilities and staffing to better serve both animals and the community,” Davis said.
Since 2022, adoptions at the rescue have increased by 257.5%.
“Our focus now is on sustaining and responsibly scaling that growth,” Davis said.
A new campaign called Shooting For the Stars was launched this year to help “scale” that growth.
