Since 2022, Boerne Backyard has focused on being the one-stop shop for outdoor furniture in Boerne.

How it started

The woman and veteran owned store was founded by Jill Lauderdale and Michelle Luckett, who started the business as a passion project.

Prior to opening the business, Lauderdale and Luckett were neighbors and friends. Seeing that Luckett had an eye for design and decorating, Lauderdale suggested a partnership for the store.

“I was selling mattresses for around five years, and I always wanted a backyard store,” Lauderdale said. “When the opportunity came around, I knew I needed help.”

The idea for the business came in July 2022, and the business opened in November of the same year.

What they offer

The business focuses on personalizing the experience of each customer, helping people choose the best option for their outdoor needs.

Products include furniture, outdoor kitchens, grills, smokers and other items focused on spicing up a backyard or patio.

“We can spend hours if not days helping customers pick out what works best for them,” Luckett said.

Luckett said a goal of the business is to sell a variety of American made products, including brands such as Polywood, Breeo and Primo.

Items ordered from the business are assembled for free and then delivered to customers. Aside from residential uses, Lauderdale and Luckett also help local businesses find the best furniture options for outdoor seating and other uses.

Through supporting veterans and other small businesses, Boerne Backyard strives to encourage local shopping in the community.

How it’s going

In February, the business celebrated an expansion into the neighboring space adding additional indoor space for displays and furniture sets.

Alongside growing the business, Lauderdale and Luckett put their quality at the forefront, ensuring that customers can be comfortable when making larger purchases associated with outdoor furniture.

The business also serves as a mediator for warranty concerns, allowing customers not to worry about warranty processes.

Ultimately, Boerne Backyard serves as a local source for outdoor kitchen and furniture needs.

“We want to be the first people to think of when thinking about their outdoor needs,” Luckett said. “We live in a time where it is really easy to shop online, but you are not going to be able to sit in it or touch the fabric or get a personalized service."
