Round Rock under fire watch

The city of Round Rock is under fire weather watch from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4, per warning from the National Weather Service for all of South Central Texas.

What is it?

Because of the presence of strong winds, low humidity and dry fuels, Round Rock and the surrounding area is susceptible to fires that could spread rapidly and be difficult to contain. The National Weather Service issues a fire weather watch under the following conditions:

• sustained winds averaging 15 miles per hour or greater
• relative humidity at 25% or less
• temperature at 75 degrees Fahrenheit or greater

What residents should know

During the fire weather watch, residents should take precaution against fire hazards and stay prepared in the event of an emergency. The city advises residents to:

• Avoid outdoor burning of debris
• Discard cigarettes properly and do not throw cigarette butts in the grass
• Secure outdoor items during strong winds
• Move vehicles and equipment off dry grass
• Have a go kit ready with necessities and irreplaceable items and identify evacuation routes
