Round Rock ISD establishes plan for legislative advocacy

Round Rock ISD officials have laid out a plan to combine community engagement with legislative advocacy over the next several years.

What you need to know

RRISD approved on March 21 a plan outlining how the board may invite community members to participate in the formation of legislative priorities over the next three years, as well as engage in state and local level advocacy with the goal of working with legislators to identify creative funding solutions, as well as address concerns related to House Bill 3 and other priorities.

This comes as the board has identified several hurdles impacting its budget, such as the stagnation of basic allotment funding, increased operating costs, as well as growth in charter and homeschool participation.

The details

Based on a similar plan from Katy ISD, the 2024-27 legislative advocacy plan identifies some of the following steps culminating in the activation of a cohort advocacy initiative at the Capitol:

• Identify elected officials who represent RRISD.
• Schedule informational meet and greets with elected officials newly assigned to district boundaries.
• Conduct listening circles tour.
• Develop plans to engage with legislators ahead of each legislative session.
• Testify on policy matters concerning district legislative priorities.
