The Williamson County Commissioners Court voted to make September Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in the county Tuesday. “I think it is incumbent upon us to continue to raise awareness, to look for and pay attention to red flags, to intervene [and] not just sit back,” said Precinct 2 Commissioner Cynthia Long, who presented the resolution. The resolution was put forth by the Alan’s Hope Project—a dedicated suicide prevention and awareness subcommittee of the Williamson County Mental Health Task Force. The Alan’s Hope Project will be hosting events during September for Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. A complete list of events can be found here. The month will end with the Alan’s Hope 5K in Cedar Park on Sept. 30. About 12.1 per 100,000 people committed suicide in Williamson County between 2010-14, according to Texas Department of State Health Services.
