Transportation, utilities building to be named in honor of former Round Rock City Manager Bob Bennett

On Jan. 23, Round Rock City Council voted 7-0 to name the city’s new transportation and utilities administration building in honor of former Round Rock City Manager Robert “Bob" L. Bennett Jr.

“I just want to say thank you,” Bennett said following the vote. “I’m overwhelmed. I appreciate it.”

Bennett was hired as the city of Round Rock’s first director of planning and zoning in 1976. He served as city manager from 1979-2003.

Throughout his career, Bennett helped bring Dell Technologies Inc. and the Round Rock Express to Round Rock, according to city documents. During his time with the city, a new library, City Hall, fire stations and other civic buildings were constructed downtown and throughout the city.

While serving as city manager, Bennett helped create the Round Rock Transportation Development Corporation, which uses “sales tax revenues generated by the corporation to build and/or improve major roadways in the city,” the documents state.

Bennett is also credited with securing a long-term water supply for the city by purchasing surface water rights in Lake Georgetown and for his work to establish the Brushy Creek Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant.
