Round Rock City Council Member Matt Baker to seek re-election

Round Rock City Council Member Matt Baker announced Jan. 4 he will seek re-election for his Place 3 seat in the May election. Baker's current term is slated to end May 1.

“I have absolutely enjoyed serving our community in this capacity," Baker said in a release. "Not only do I enjoy the day-to-day obligations of serving on Council, but I have great satisfaction from meeting with our citizens and working together to solve our city’s issues.”

Initiatives Baker has supported during his tenure include the launch of the Round Rock Cares fund in March to support local small businesses; Round Rock's community development block grant to assistance residents with rent, mortgage and utility payments; and a $25 million reduction in the city's budget.

“We all are struggling this year and just like our businesses and our families, we need to streamline city spending," Baker said.

Baker is a graduate of Texas A&M University and worked as a professional engineer at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for more than 20 years. During his time at the TCEQ, he served as its director of the small-business and environmental assistance program, as well as overseeing the TCEQ emergency response team.

Baker has lived in Central Texas since 1993 and in Round Rock since 2012. He and his wife, Natasha, currently own Baker Realty. Outside of Round Rock City Council, Baker also serves as president of the Rotary Club of Round Rock and on Senior Access' board.
