Aug. 5 demonstration to call for safe reopening of Pflugerville ISD schools

Less than two weeks before the start of the fall 2020 semester, a local union announced plans for a public demonstration in Pflugerville ISD.

The Pflugerville Educators Association is organizing an Aug. 5 car parade open to PfISD staff, students, parents and other interested community members. The intent, according to the organizers, is to "demand a safe school reopening that includes all stakeholder voices."

PfISD officials were not immediately available for comment July 31.

As it stands, PfISD plans to start school 100% virtually Aug. 13. After three weeks of remote learning, families will be able to choose in-person or online instruction. PfISD officials have stated these plans could change should public health concerns or direction from governing officials dictate.

As part of the demonstration, PfEA will ask the board of trustees to submit a waiver to the Texas Education Agency requesting eight weeks of remote learning. Further, the group is calling for greater inclusion of staff, students, parents and community members on the district's re-entry task force. The task force is composed of 57 members, according to information provided by PfISD.

The public demonstration will take place from noon-1 p.m. Participants will gather at 1501 Pecan St. and from there drive to the PfISD Central Office Building at 1401 Pecan St.
