Water main break spills 1.5M gallons of water into Richardson’s Duck Creek

A contractor accidentally ruptured a 16-inch water line May 7, resulting in 1.5 million gallons of drinking water spilling into Richardson's stormwater drainage system, according to a news release from the city.

The resulting spill led to a localized fish kill, a sudden death of fish in an area, in the Duck Creek drainage basin.

The details

The stormwater system flows into Duck Creek and the spill introduced a large volume of chlorinated water into Duck Creek. However, recent rainfall helped dilute the chlorine and reduce the environmental impact, per the release.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and Texas Parks and Wildlife has been notified and are monitoring the situation, per the release.

The water was treated, potable water and does not pose a risk to humans, according to the release.
