Richardson to host Oct. 23 celebration in honor of $21 million Main Street project

An event to celebrate improvements to historic downtown Richardson will be held Oct. 23.

The Main Street Celebration, which will be hosted in partnership with the city of Richardson and merchants from the Core District, will feature street artists, family-friendly activities and shopping, according to a Sept. 27 news release. Food vendors, located on McKinney Street, will include Del’s Charcoal Hamburgers, Yummy Burgers & BBQ, and Isabelly’s Chocolates & Sweet Treats.

A stage will be set up on the lawn between Texas and Interurban streets. Live music, which begins at 2 p.m., will be headlined by Texas native Abraham Alexander, per the release.

The free event begins at noon with a ribbon cutting. Parking will be available at lots on Texas Street off of Main and Polk streets, according to the release. A free shuttle to the event will also be accessible via the Richardson ISD Administration Building on Greenville Avenue.

“This celebration is the beginning of a tradition that we hope to carry on for many years as Main Street and Downtown Richardson transform into a destination that our residents and all North Texans can fully enjoy,” Mayor Paul Voelker said in a statement.

The Main Street project, which began in mid-2019, involved $21 million worth of infrastructure updates to about one mile’s worth of Main and of Greenville Avenue. The area now features wider walkways, additional landscaping, decorative lighting, new community gathering places and outdoor restaurant seating, according to the release.

Additional development is underway near the intersection of Main and US 75. The Belt + Main project will add apartments, retail and restaurant options. More infrastructure improvements to the area are also included in the proposed bond package, which will go before Richardson voters Nov. 2.
