Demolition began on a building next to the Richardson Animal Shelter earlier this week to make way for a new outdoor area that will allow potential adopters to meet with dogs, according to a news release from the city.

Demolition was scheduled to begin Aug. 31 on the former Family Medical Building, located next to the Richardson Animal Shelter. The demolition is expected to take two to three weeks.
According to the release, a construction fence was set to be installed around the site and some shelter parking spaces may be unavailable during the demolition work.
Looking ahead
After the demolition is complete, part of the site will be converted into a new three-section outdoor area, per the city’s release, which will include multiple areas for public use. The rest of the site will be used by the city’s nearby Service Center.
The addition follows renovations at Richardson Animal Shelter that added a new main entrance, entry facade, storage rooms and expanded staff office. The renovated shelter reopened in late 2025 following almost two years of work.
