Prosper council greenlights $3.6 million addition for upcoming public works building

The details

Town staff were able to lower the cost of adding the shop facility by using a pre-engineered metal building for the structure instead of traditional concrete masonry, per town documents.

Plans for the facility include several elements that can be added if more funding becomes available, such as:

Some context

The redesign comes after Prosper voters rejected potential funding for the public works building in last November’s bond election.

Prosper officials originally planned to build a $25 million public works facility with $15 million of previously earmarked funds and $10 million from a bond proposition.

The majority of propositions from the 2025 election failed, including the funds for the public works building, according to previous reporting.

“While I am disappointed that several desperately needed projects will not take place at this time, Prosper will remain a place with incomparable strategic vision and strong financial stewardship,” Mayor David Bristol said in a statement last November.

Following the failed bond proposition, officials approved a $23 million contract for a scaled-back version of the public works facility using money identified from project savings and capital dedicated funds at a Dec. 9 meeting.

Additional funding from similar sources was identified for the shop facility this year, bringing the total estimated cost to $26.6 million, according to a presentation by town staff.

Looking ahead

Construction on the public works building started in January and is scheduled to wrap up in spring 2027, according to the project website.
