Freezing temperatures, sleet likely to cause icy conditions throughout Dallas-Fort Worth Feb. 23-24

Another winter cold front is making its way into the Dallas Fort-Worth area and will likely affect driving conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

A winter weather advisory is in effect across DFW from 6 a.m. Feb. 23 to 6 p.m. Feb. 24, according to the National Weather Service.

The warning states the weather will include a wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet with possible ice accumulation from one-tenth to two-tenths of an inch.

Matt Bishop, meteorologist with the weather service, said the cold front will be somewhat similar to the one from earlier this month, but it will be a bit drier and not quite as cold.

“The cold air is already coming in now, and it’s going to get colder,” Bishop said Feb. 22. “Light precipitation should start tonight and will continue off and on [throughout Feb. 23]."

The weather service is asking residents to prepare for deteriorating road conditions to start Wednesday, Feb. 23, and to worsen Thursday, Feb. 24. The warning also states residents should drive with caution.

Bishop said the freezing rain and cold weather will likely peak late on Feb. 23 and last until the next morning. He said the weather service is expecting the freezing rain and sleet across the DFW area to last until temperatures begin to rise throughout the day on Feb. 25.

“[The roads] may not be quite ready for driving Friday morning,” Bishop said. “It should melt and dry by Friday afternoon.”
