Pflugerville ISD will not invoke virtual learning for spring semester

Despite a recent upswing in global and local COVID-19 cases over the holidays, Pflugerville ISD will not return to virtual learning to start the spring 2022 semester.

In a letter to parents, Superintendent Doug Killian said district officials are diligently watching the rise in cases, but so far medical professionals have indicated the newest strain of COVID-19 has delivered mild symptoms for those who are vaccinated.

"We have received multiple emails from employees and parents asking if we would be going virtual due to the increase in numbers," Killian said in the letter. "Unfortunately, the Texas Education Agency has not given the authority for public schools to go full virtual for any reason, and this is not an option available to us."

Students return to class Jan. 5, and Killian said PfISD will maintain guidance from the Department of State Health Services and the Texas Education Agency and continue to require any students testing positive for COVID-19 to quarantine for 10 days.

If DSHS and TEA change that guidance, district officials will review requirements and provide additional communication to parents, Killian said.

Data from the city of Austin shows Pflugerville's 78660 ZIP code remains one of the most prolific areas for COVID-19, with 129 confirmed cases in the last 14 days.

"Please continue to wear a mask, per our district protocols; wash your hands; get vaccinated; and most importantly, stay home if you are sick," Killian said. "All of these practices can help keep our students and staff safe and prevent any potential spread of COVID[-19] in our facilities. Thank you for your efforts in this regard. We’re looking forward to a great second semester."
