Recently released performance data for the 2025 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness administered this spring to students in third to eighth grade show some gains and declines among Hutto ISD students, compared to state averages.
The Texas Education Agency released statewide and district-specific test scores for the STAAR on June 16. Science scores will be released July 31.
What you need to know
Statewide trends show steady growth in reading scores, as well as gains in math and social studies.
The TEA uses a four-tiered grading system for student performance to score STAAR test performance in each subject:
- Did not meet grade level
- Approaches grade level
- Meets grade level
- Masters grade level
"Approaches grade level" is considered a passing score, with the TEA determining that students with this score are likely to succeed in the next grade or course, but could need targeted academic intervention.
The local impact
In HISD, data for passing scores show students performed at or above the state average on two exams, but below the state average on 11 exams.
Student performance improved for fourth- and sixth-grade math year-over-year, while performance on other exams dropped between two and nine percentage points, data shows.

“The 2026 results demonstrate both the progress Texas students are making and the work that remains ahead of us," Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath said in a June 16 news release. "We are encouraged by continued gains in mathematics, especially with the growing number of students participating and succeeding in advanced mathematics courses. The gains in middle school reading are also notable, as it may be associated with the statewide ban on the use of cell phones in schools."
