Friendswood ISD approves list of 'hazardous' roads near schools

To receive state funding for transporting certain students, Friendswood ISD’s board of trustees adopted a resolution at its July 22 meeting that identified where hazardous crosswalks and roads are within two miles of the district’s campuses.

The resolution is required for the district to request transportation funds needed to take students to school who live within 2 miles of their campus, but would have to cross hazardous, unchecked roads to walk there.

Generally, only students who live 2 miles or more away from their campus are eligible for transportation from the district, according to the Texas Education Agency’s School Transportation Allotment Handbook. The policy carves out a way for students within 2 miles to receive transportation but requires the district to submit the resolution identifying hazardous roads.

Those hazardous areas are defined as not having a walkway, controlled or guarded crosswalk, or high traffic volumes where students must walk, according to the resolution. Those areas include:

• FM 518 and Friendswood Drive
• FM 2351 and Edgewood Drive
• Stadium Lane
• Sunset Drive
• Briarmeadow Avenue
• Fm 528 and Parkwood Avenue
• Mansion Parkway
• Wilderness Trail
• Friendswood Lakes Boulevard and West Boulevard

The district annually approves this kind of resolution, according to district agenda material from the meeting. The updates from last year’s list include adding Friendswood Lakes Boulevard and West Boulevard due to the loss of a crossing guard at the intersection.
