Alvin ISD students will have access to additional dual credit opportunities, following board approval of several higher education agreements at its Aug. 11 meeting.
The overview
The district will continue its partnership with Alvin College to provide eligible students with the opportunity to earn high school and college credit through approved dual credit courses, including economics, astronomy and practicum in health science, according to district documents.
The courses may be offered at AISD campuses, the Alvin College campus or online, documents show.
To be eligible, students must meet one of the following applicable college-readiness requirements, which includes:
- Being exempt from the Texas Success Initiative, or TSI
- Demonstrating college readiness through an approved assessment
- Meeting the requirements for a Texas First Diploma
Students must also meet any course-specific prerequisites and complete Alvin College's dual enrollment orientation, documents show.
Once enrolled, students must maintain a 2.0 cumulative college GPA and follow the college’s dual-enrollment requirements. Students also must take courses within their degree plan, district documents show.
For a course taken at an AISD campus, the cost for students is $25 per credit hour, or $75 for a three-credit course, plus a $30 registration fee, according to the college’s website.
Diving in deeper
The district is expanding access to additional college-credit opportunities through McMurry University's dual credit program, which offers courses online and at AISD campuses.
The courses cost $200 for three credits or $300 for four credits, with no additional student fees. The university recommends that students wanting to enroll have an unweighted 3.0 high school GPA and an endorsement from their counselor, documents show.
Also of note
The district is also partnering with The University of Texas at Austin through its OnRamps program, offering courses on AISD campuses through Canvas, according to district documents.
OnRamps does not require an application or Texas Success Initiative Assessment, or TSIA, though individual courses may have prerequisites, according to the Texas Education Agency.
The district will pay a subsidized rate of $149 per student for each three-credit course, documents show.
