Capital Metro opens new Norwood Transit Center at Northeast Austin Walmart

Capital Metro has finished work on a new bus transit center at the Walmart in Northeast Austin that will offer riders a safer space for transferring buses.

The region’s transit agency took input from Walmart to reconfigure and renovate the transit center located at 1030 Norwood Park Blvd., Austin, northeast of the I-35 and US 183 interchange.

Capital Metro President and CEO Randy Clarke and Travis County Commissioner Jeff Travillion, who also sits on Capital Metro's board of directors, toured the new facility prior to its opening Nov. 26.

Features of the new transit center include additional bus bays; more shelters and seating; additional shade; digital signs showing real-time bus departure information; and a security camera, according to Capital Metro. Riders will also have improved access to walk to the center.

Construction on the center began in September, and Capital Metro anticipates costs will come in just under the $700,000 budget.

Capital Metro is planning an official ceremony for the opening of the center Dec. 2 with City Council Members Greg Casar and Natasha Harper-Madison in attendance.
