Weiss High School names new athletic director, head football coach

Former Hutto and Friendswood head football coach Steve Van Meter has been tapped as the new athletic director and head football coach for Weiss High School, Pflugerville ISD announced April 8.

Van Meter brings with him more than three decades of high school football coaching experience. Most recently, Van Meter led the Hutto ISD football program to the Class 5A Division II state quarterfinals, according to PfISD’s announcement.

In 2018, Van Meter retired from his position with Hutto ISD, where former offensive coordinator Brad Laplante took over Van Meter’s position.

Van Meter in 1992 began his high school coaching career at Friendswood High School just south of Houston, according to the PfISD release. His teams at Friendswood ISD advanced to the state quarterfinals three times and the state semifinals twice.

In 2010, Van Meter was inducted into the Greater Houston Football Coaches Association Hall of Honor, according to PfISD.

Over 24 seasons between Friendswood ISD and Hutto ISD, Van Meter earned an overall record of 187-98-1 and made 18 playoff appearances.

“I love being in the arena, around the coaching staff, the kids,” Van Meter said in the release. “I didn’t want to be an old man and say, ‘You know what? You gave it up too early.’”

PfISD stated on April 8 that Van Meter is expected to assume his role within a week. Van Meter replaces Tommy Aultman as Weiss High School’s athletic director and head football coach. Aultman resigned the post to take a position in PfISD’s Athletics Department, according to the district.
