The Texas Department of Transportation updated residents at an open house Thursday evening on the status and details of a project, estimated at $7 million, to reduce future traffic on RM 2222 and RM 620. The open house took place at Vandegrift High School. While three separate transportation projects are proposed for the area, the open house focused on the project to create a new bypass road in Four Points. The new bypass road would be for Steiner Ranch and Lakeway traffic traveling to and from Austin, allowing some motorists to avoid the intersection at RM 2222 and RM 620. The bypass project would also create a center turn lane with a median on RM 2222 and an auxiliary lane on RM 620 that would give vehicles traveling to the Austin area a direct path onto the new bypass. Project Manager Matt Werner said the goal of the project would be to improve future safety and mobility while minimizing community, environmental and right of way impacts for the Four Points area. The intersection at RM 2222 and RM 620 currently causes an estimated 1 million hours of annual delay, he said. Without the proposed improvements, that number is anticipated to increase to over 3 million hours annually by 2020. The improvements would cut that number down to 1.5 million hours annually by 2020, he said. The proposed project is funded through the $720 million Austin Mobility Bond, which was approved by voters last November
