City of Austin delivers proclamation amid Peace Family Housing Project’s groundbreaking

Peace Lutheran Church is developing a $1.2 million transitional housing facility in Northwest Austin to expand resources for families facing homelessness, food insecurity and instability in the community.

Peace Family Housing Project, along with its nonprofit partners HomeAid Austin and Foundation for the Homeless, hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the project on June 9.

The facility will include four apartments, which can house a maximum of six families at a time for a 30-90 day stay.

In addition to housing, families will also receive help with case management, limited financial assistance and connections to community resources for services such as mental health care, said Monte Osburn, executive director of Foundation for the Homeless.

The new housing project is only the second of its kind in the region, according to Lynne Williams, executive director of HomeAid Austin.

“In Northwest Austin, shelter for families struggling to stay off the streets has simply not been available anywhere near the schools these children already attend,” Austin City Council member Krista Laine said. “These four housing units offer a beacon of hope and a helping hand for families in their most difficult moments.”

A new chapter

Peace Family Housing Project and its partners hosted a groundbreaking event which featured statements from Williams, Pastor Carolyn Albert Donovan and Laine.

On behalf of the city of Austin and Mayor Kirk Watson, Laine also delivered a proclamation designating June 9 as Peace Family Housing Project day.

What’s next

Construction on the housing facility is estimated to start in October, Williams said. Peace Family Housing Project is expected to be completed in spring or summer 2027.
