Round Rock ISD to plan for new superintendent May 18

"We have invited the trustee candidates to be there as well because whoever is named to Place 6, they are really going to have to hit the ground running," Hanna said.

On Jan. 30 superintendent Jess Chvez announced his retirement. On May 1, the board agreed on a list of top characteristics that it would like to see in the district's next superintendent. Those characteristics include someone who is visionary, has impeccable integrity, is approachable and receptive, and has demonstrated a proven track record in a similar district to Round Rock ISD.

At the meeting, the board named Jaie Kim as Spicewood Elementary School's new principal. She currently serves as the assistant principal at John B. Connally High School in Pflugerville ISD.

"As a proud product of Round Rock ISD myself I am thrilled to come back home and be part of the Panther family at Spicewood Elementary School," Kim said.

The board's May 16 meeting was Glen Colby's last as a trustee. Colby resigned on April 5, citing board time demands as his reason for stepping down.

"It has been an extreme personal honor to serve the community, to serve the citizens and students of the district as a member of the board of education for Round Rock ISD for these past five years."

End of school year findings and recommendations

The School Health Advisory Council gave recommendations regarding nutrition, recess and risky behavior for the district. SHAC recommendations include for the board to review some of the district's food policies to determine whether some items may be improved to reflect the Institute of Medicine's nutrition standards, a nonprofit organization that helps those in private sectors and in government make informed decisions about heath.

Matt Stillwell, the SHAC's chairman, said that the council did not have enough time before the end of the school year to make recommendations regarding other areas of student health such as sex education.
