The Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission is asking Austin residents for their input before drawing district boundaries for Austin City Council's 10-1 plan.
In November, voters approved creating 10 single-member districts for City Council elections and representation. Under the 10-1 plan, the mayor is still elected at-large. The 14-member ICRC is drawing the map and will need to have it ready before the next election in November 2014.
Public meetings will start Aug. 14 and continue through November. Each meeting focuses on the geographic area of its respective precinct. The next meeting in North Austin will be Aug. 17 at 10 a.m. at the Austin Public Library's Little Walnut Creek Branch, 835 W. Rundberg Lane.
Organizations such as the Austinites for Geographic Representation have been involved in the redistricting process since before November election. Ed English, a Milwood neighborhood resident and North Austin representative for AGR, said that if the organization can reach a consensus on the boundaries for each district, it will likely make recommendations to the ICRC at the community meetings.
