Summer break gives students a chance to transition into campers and experience all the region has to offer. Camps provide opportunities to hone athleticism, learn a new skill or participate in outdoor activities. This guide features nearly 50 summer camps available at art schools, churches, day cares, preschools, sports facilities and other locations throughout Austin, Cedar Park and Leander.

Academic

Bits, Bytes & Bots Camps include programs in making movies, game creation, programming and coding, electronics, robotics and modifying “Minecraft.” Camps will take place June 5-9, 12-16, 19-23, 26-30 and July 5-7, 10-14, 17-21, 24-28 and July 31-Aug. 4 at Summit Christian Academy in Cedar Park. Camps will be from 8:30 a.m.-noon and 1-4:30 p.m. Children ages 6-14 are eligible to attend. Camps cost $295 for five-day camps for morning or afternoon sessions. Learning Cycle Tutors summer SAT/ACT courses The courses offer guided SAT/ACT instruction via provided Kaplan Review materials by qualified, advanced-degree tutors. Mathnasium of Cedar Park camps Mathnasium will be offering two kinds of camps this summer. Chess camp is open to participants ages 6-14 and will feature National Chess Master Paul Chaplin. These camps aim to offer students an immersive, fun and structured hybrid chess learning environment. The camp will be June 5-9, 19-23, July 10-14 and Aug. 7-11. Hours will be from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and the cost is $245 per week. Mathnasium is also offering Math and Lego Computer Programming camps for participants age 8 and older. Creative Spirit Summer Workshops The Creative Spirit Workshops focus on the elements and principles of design that make up the fundamentals required to create visual art and design. The camps aim to have children leave with a new appreciation and love of writing. 4Reelz School of Film camps 4Reelz School of Film is offering two summer camps in Cedar Park this summer that cover the art of making comic books and videography using the stop-motion technique. “Stop (Motion!) Lego Time” is from 9 a.m.-noon and allows students to work in pairs to create a short story, draw it out, and build it with Legos, and then they will bring it to life on film. During each session students will choose a themed Lego kit and use those kits to create their own movie, complete with sound effects and music. “Comic Book Creation” is from 1-4 p.m. and will explore the history and lore of traditional comic books and card games. Students will then create their own hero and tell their unique stories. This class will be a combination of writing and drawing, and it aims to challenge the students to share their vision through both words and images. Camp Timberwolf The Cedar Park Parks and Recreation Department hosts Camp Timberwolf, a day camp that is recreational in nature and is not licensed by the state as a certified day care program. The camp offers a variety of activities, such as sports, games, environmental outings, movies, and arts and crafts. The summer day camp will include a field trip each Friday and swimming on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The camp is open to participants ages 5-12, and the five-day camps run June 5-Aug. 25. Equine Rehabilitation of Central Texas camps ERCT rehabilitates rescued horses and provides a therapeutic riding program called Hopeful Hearts. The organization offers a horse boot camp, in which children with disabilities and their siblings can ride horses each day and also participate in art and music activities. Leander Parks and Recreation Department camps Jedi Engineering is open to participants ages 5-6. Campers can explore engineering principles by designing and building projects using Lego materials such as X-Wings, R2 Units, Energy Catapults, Defense Turrets and Settlements from a galaxy far, far away. The camp is from 9 a.m.-noon and costs $155. There also is a Jedi Master Engineering program for participants ages 7-12. Campers can discover key engineering concepts such as gear trains, worm drives, pneumatics and eccentric motion and build projects using Lego materials such as X-Wings, AT-AT walkers, Pod Racers, Star Destroyers, Cloud Cities, Settlements, Fortresses and other complex machines. The program is from 1-4 p.m. and costs $155. Both Jedi courses run June 12-16. The department also is offering a Junior Golf Camp for ages 5-9. The camp is June 19-23, and it provides professional instruction in full swings, short game, putting, rules, etiquette and safety. Twin Lakes Family YMCA camps YMCA Camp Twin Lakes attendees can participate in dozens of activities, such as archery, basketball, hiking, kayaking, ropes courses, soccer and swimming. A related program offers the same activities with support for campers with special needs. Specialty camps offer activities such as cooking, dance, first aid and sports. Kinder camps offer summer learning for younger campers. Excursion camps offer outdoor activities and field trips to parks, museums and other attractions. The camps run June 5-Aug. 18 from 7 a.m.-6:30 p.m. For the Twin Lakes outdoor adventure program, participants entering kindergarten through ninth grade can attend, and the cost is $220 a week for nonmembers and $188 for members. Ages vary by camp. For excursions, the cost is $167 for nonmembers and $157 for members. Children in kindergarten-sixth grade can sign up. For the kinder camps, the hours are 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m., and the cost is $160 for nonmembers and $110 for members. Sports

All-Star Sports Camps The camps promote teamwork and sportsmanship through healthy competition via sports and active games. Teaching children basic skills and game rules are intended to allow every child the chance to discover new talents and push themselves to refine their natural abilities. Children learn basic sports skills and rules, healthful competition and talent development. The program is open to participants ages 5-14, and the five-day camps run June 5-Aug. 18.  A full-day camp is from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and costs $289 per week. The half-day camp is either 8:30 a.m.-noon or 1-4:30 p.m. and costs $189 per week. Discounts are available for siblings or multiple weeks.

Austin Volleyball Academy camps The academy offers indoor and beach technical skills camps from June 12-Aug. 18 in which students will learn the basic and elite skills of indoor and beach volleyball. Brandy Perryman Shooting Camp BPSC is a four-day basketball camp that include 32 hours of instruction, which is approximately the same amount of time as a month of practice in middle school or a full season of a youth league. Daily team competitions are the highlight of the week, intended to allow children to be a part of a team with no pressure and have fun. To promote self-esteem and self-discipline, BPSC includes individualized drills and competitions throughout the camp. Camps may be hosted out of the West Austin Youth Association, Anderson High School, Clay Madsen Recreation Center, Gorzycki Middle School, Round Rock High School, Brentwood Christian School, Murchison Middle School, Cedar Park Recreation Center or Brushy Creek Community Center facilities, depending the camp. Sessions run June 12-Aug. 10 and are open to students ages 7-16. The daily schedule is from 8:45 a.m.-4:45 p.m. Cost is $225 until May 31, $245 after May 31.

British Soccer camps The camps teach soccer according to British rules. Instructors teach foot skills, technical drills, tactical practices, freestyle soccer, coached scrimmages and tournament play. Campers also learn game values, such as respect and responsibility. The program is open to children ages 5-16 and includes several sessions: June 5-9, July 17-21 and Aug. 14-18. Full-day camps are 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and half-day camps are from 8-11:30 a.m. or 12:30-4 p.m. There also is a 5:30-8:30 p.m. session available in Leander. Location and cost vary by camp.

HK Taekwondo Instructors teach sportsmanship, self-confidence and skills with activities including field trips, games, healthy eating, math, movies, nunchaku training, taekwondo and Zumba. Junior Golf camps Professional instructors teach golf basics such as full swings, short games, putting, game rules, etiquette and safety. The camps include daily games, prizes, snacks and drinks. On Thursday the camp includes on-course instruction and a scramble. Golfers of varying abilities and skill levels are invited. Leander ISD athletics camps School instructors host camps that cover a variety of outdoor activities and skill levels, including baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, volleyball and wrestling. Leander Youth Soccer clinics Leander Youth Soccer will host two clinics this summer for those interested in learning the basics of soccer plus some extra skills. Premier Athletic Complex camps Basketball, volleyball and futsal camps teach fundamental skills for each game.
