Here's the latest on four upcoming and ongoing road projects in the New Caney and Porter area. This list is not comprehensive.

Upcoming projects 

Gene Campbell Road widening 

  • Project: Gene Campbell Road will be widened to five lanes with roadside ditches between FM 1314 and FM 1485. The project will also include improvements at Tree Monkey Road, FM 1314 and FM 1485. 

  • Update: Project kickoff is expected once ongoing scoping efforts are complete, said Kennedy Williams, a community outreach staffer with Montgomery County Precinct 4, via email Sept. 14. Negotiations with a project consultant are underway and kickoff will occur after contract approval.

  • Timeline: TBD

Ongoing projects 

Old Houston Road widening 

  • Project: Old Houston Road will be widened from two to four lanes with a turn lane and roadside ditches between Hwy. 242 and FM 1314 in a three-phase project. 

  • Update: Construction on Segment 1 began Aug. 31, while preliminary engineering and design are underway for Segments 2 and 3, Williams said. 

  • Timeline: Aug. 31, 2026-June 2027 (Segment 1), TBD (Segments 2-3)

  • Cost: $7.25 million (Segment 1), TBD (Segments 2-3)

  • Funding source: 2025 road bond Precinct 4 commissioner’s office 

Sorters Road Segment 2 widening 

  • Project: Sorters Road will be widened from two to four lanes with a turn lane between North Bentwood Channel and Northpark Drive. Ditches will also be reconstructed. 

  • Update: Construction is underway and on track for completion in the first quarter of 2027, Williams said. 

  • Timeline: January 2026-first quarter of 2027 

  • Cost: $15.6 million

  • Funding source: 2025 road bond Precinct 4 commissioner’s office 

Ford Road widening 

  • Project: Ford Road will be widened from two to four lanes with a continuous turn lane between Hwy. 59 and Loop 494, and between Ricewood Drive and the county line. The two-phase project also includes modifications to Loop 494, signalization at the Ricewood Drive intersection and reconstructed ditches. 

  • Update: Segment 1 is under construction. For Segment 2, design is complete and the project is anticipated to be let for construction in the fourth quarter of 2026. 

  • Timeline: October 2025-fourth quarter 2026 (Segment 1), first quarter 2027-TBD (Segment 2) 

  • Cost: $5.9 million (Segment 1), TBD (Segment 2)

  • Funding sources: 2025 road bond, Precinct 4 commissioner’s office, federal funding secured by U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw and the Houston-Galveston Area Council (Segment 2)
