Excessive heat warning issued for San Antonio metro area

An excessive heat warning and heat advisory has been issued for the San Antonio metro and neighboring areas, according to the National Weather Service.

What you need to know

The heat advisory is in effect until Aug. 21 at 9 p.m., according to the National Weather Service, as temperatures are expected to rise above 100 degrees. Temperatures from 103 degrees to 106 degrees could be felt from New Braunfels to San Antonio. A heat advisory could be issued by the National Weather Service for the coming days after Aug. 21 should conditions persist, according to NWS.

"Above-normal temperatures are expected to persist through Thursday, with some relief from the extreme heat anticipated by the weekend," according to an X post from NWS.

Certain groups are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illnesses, according to the National Weather Service, including:

• Young children and infants
• Older adults
• People with chronic medical conditions
• Pregnant women

NWS advises the following precautions during extreme heat:

• Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol.
• Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing.
• Apply SPF 30 or higher every two hours if you're outside.
• Rest in shaded or air-conditioned areas as often as possible.
