Walnut 6 sign being relocated for New Braunfels library project

The city of New Braunfels has acquired the historic Walnut 6 movie sign.

The sign is being relocated to the site of the Southeast Library, which will be known as the city's Walnut Branch, Deputy City Manager Jordan Matney said July 17 during the City Council’s summer workshop.

"We think it's a great opportunity to get something on the other side of I-35 that will help us message what's going on in our community," Matney said.

The Walnut 6 sign was part of one of the only movie theaters in the community for 30 years. When the movie theater was initially demolished in 2004, the sign remained because a sign that size could no longer be placed anywhere in New Braunfels. The sign was also left up in case a future developer would want to reuse the sign. In 2025, redevelopment began, and those developers were not interested in the sign, Matney said.

"We started conversations with the developer and got a sweet deal where you pay to take it down, and you can have it,” she said. "We have that sign at a local sign shop currently being rehabilitated.”

The decision aligns with the New Braunfels 2024-2029 Strategic Plan and recently adopted Arts and Culture Master Plan, Matney said.

The update

Matney said they are in the process of finalizing the project’s design and getting ready to move into permitting. The project is anticipated to break ground in early 2027 and be completed in 2028.

The $28.56 million library project, located at the corner of South Walnut Avenue and Settlers Crossing, is funded through Proposition C of the city’s voter-approved 2023 bond. The Southeast Library aims to strengthen access to public services for families and students living in this part of the community. The new library will serve New Braunfels Middle School, New Braunfels Academy, and Klein Road, Voss Farms, County Line and Walnut Springs elementary schools, as previously reported by Community Impact.
