Post office, federal building closures announced for Jan. 9

All federal offices will be closed Jan. 9 in observance of a National Day of Mourning for former President James Earl Carter, Jr.

The gist

President Joe Biden issued an executive order Dec. 30 to close all executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government Jan. 9. Those closures include federal courts in San Antonio, the Internal Revenue Service office on Datapoint Drive, Social Security offices and all U.S. Post Office locations in the greater San Antonio area.

The order allows for some departments to remain open if deemed necessary due to interests regarding “national security, defense, or other public need.”

According to a proclamation on Dec. 29, President Biden ordered all United States flags be flown at half-staff at all military and naval stations as well as all public buildings and grounds for 30 days.

Former President Jimmy Carter was the 39th President of the United States and served from 1977-1981. He died Dec. 29 at age 100.
