Nikki Shaw sworn in as New Braunfels District 6 council member

Shaw said she is in this position because of God and the people who showed up to vote.

"We had a large turnout and I encourage everybody to continue to show up, to continue to have your voice heard and to continue to be an active part of this process every month when we have City Council," Shaw said.

Outgoing District 6 council member Ryan said they had issues throughout the city that needed the next generation of leaders to take over.

"I am so immensely proud of the work that we've been able to accomplish with everybody up here and everybody that I've gotten the chance to serve on council with," Ryan said.

How we got here

Three candidates—Shaw, Ryan and Steven Voges—were vying for the council seat. Ryan and Shaw received the most votes during the May election but did not receive more than 50% of the vote which required a runoff election. A runoff election is held when no candidate receives a majority, or over 50% of the vote, according to the city's charter.
