The New Braunfels Police Department will continue firearm training at Dietz Gun Shop and Range—at least for now.
What happened
City Council renewed its lease agreement for $2,000 annually with Dietz Gun Shop and Range for an additional five years during a meeting July 27, according to agenda documents.
District 6 City Council member Nikki Shaw asked if the range is exclusively used by NBPD. Public Works Assistant Director Matthew Eckmann said there is a portion of land within the Dietz property that is gated and protected for NBPD to use exclusively.
"We've made all the improvements out there to the site so it is exclusively for our use," Eckmann said.
One more thing
Although the new lease agreement isn't set to expire until July 31, 2031, the city is considering a joint public safety training center for its police and fire departments.
"The current feasibility study that we're undergoing now will include a look at a city-owned range in the future," New Braunfels City Manager Robert Camarano said.
The dais awarded a contract to architect firm Randall Scott Architects in June to put together a feasibility study and site assessment for the facility in June. The study is anticipated to be completed sometime between December and March, according to previous reporting by Community Impact.
