Comal County commissioners approved the appointment of Mark Long to fill the vacant justice of the peace, Precinct 3 position on Jan. 29, following the resignation of Mike Rust.

Rust had previously taken a leave of absence from the position, during which Long was appointed to serve in the interim. However, after Rust returned, he submitted a formal letter of resignation stating his final day in office would be Jan. 31, Comal County Judge Sherman Krause said.
As a result, commissioners were required to appoint someone to serve the remainder of the unexpired term, which runs from Feb. 1 through Dec. 31. Long said he was willing to continue serving in the position, prompting the recommendation for his appointment, Krause said.
