One of the newest schools in Comal ISD now has a name.
The Comal ISD board of trustees approved Dr. Jerry S. Major Middle School as the name for Middle School No. 9 during a regular meeting March 26.
The details
The school is named in honor of former CISD Superintendent Jerry Major, who was the district's superintendent from 1993-2000, according to a news release. Major was an educator for over 35 years and held numerous leadership roles, according to the release.
Nominators called Major a “class act,” not only to CISD but to The Texas Hill Country as a whole, the release states.
The authority to name schools falls on the board, but the name must meet certain criteria, according to local code. Schools may be named to honor educators, indicate geographic location or after former schools with historical significance.
How we got here
The school’s construction was passed as part of the district’s voter-approved 2023 bond, Proposition A, according to the district’s website.
The $123.55 million project broke ground in February 2025 and is expected to be completed by April 2027, as previously reported by Community Impact.
The middle school will be located at 6004 Guthrie Trail, inside the Mayfair subdivision, according to the district’s website.
Naming nominations began in July 2025, followed by naming committee deliberations in fall 2025 and February. The board met in December to hear potential nominees before the final nominee was presented for approval, according to a presentation.
What they’re saying
CISD Superintendent John E. Chapman III said naming the school after Major was an honor. Major was one of the individuals who molded him as a young superintendent at Comfort ISD, and during his time taking over Comal ISD.
"He's one of the individuals who molded me, and told me everything that I shouldn't do as a young, early 30-year-old superintendent at the time,” Chapman said. “He just always talks so positively about Comal ISD.”
CISD board President Courtney Biasatti said they are pleased to honor the tradition of excellence Major helped establish during his time as superintendent and through his service in the community.
“His legacy of kindness, commitment to education and putting kids first, will be remembered for generations to come,” Biasatti said in the release.
