Utility relocation work continues on SH 5 as part of the project’s first phase, with the second phase expected to start in 2027. Here are six updates on current or planned transportation projects in McKinney.

Upcoming
Spur 399 utility relocations
Project: The city of McKinney’s water and wastewater utilities will be relocated in advance of TxDOT’s upcoming reconstruction project along Spur 399.
Update: Design is 95% complete. Easement acquisition is underway and construction is expected to begin in early 2027 with a six- to eight-month duration.
Venu Sunset Amphitheater capacity improvement projects
Project: Construction of various off-site improvements is intended to increase intersection capacity at multiple locations surrounding the planned event venue.
Update: The construction contract has been awarded and work is expected to begin in September 2026.
Timeline: September 2026-May 2027
Cost: $13.4 million

Silverado Trail lane expansion
Project: Silverado Trail’s westbound lanes will be constructed between Kenley Drive and Burnett Drive, including a bridge over Rowlett Creek. The project includes relocation of an existing North Texas Municipal Water District sanitary sewer line.
Update: Design is 90% complete. The project is expected to bid in early 2027.
SH 5 Utility Relocations Phase 2
Project Description: Relocation of city utilities, including water and wastewater lines, in advance of the Texas Department of Transportation’s reconstruction project along SH 5.
Update: Design is 95% complete. The project is expected to bid in early 2027.
Ongoing
SH 5 Utility Relocations Phase 1
Project: The city of McKinney’s water and wastewater utilities will be relocated in advance of TxDOT’s upcoming reconstruction project along SH 5.
Update: Construction is approximately 80% complete. All relocations south of Eldorado Parkway/Industrial Boulevard have been completed and TxDOT’s project is underway. Various locations between Elm Street and US 380 along SH 5 will experience localized lane closures and detours to complete remaining construction.
Medical Center Drive improvements
Project Description: Crews are reconstructing and widening Medical Center Drive between Frisco Road and Spur 399. When finished, the road will be a continuous four-lane divided roadway.
Update: Construction is underway and approximately 70% complete.
