Nonprofit clinic CommonGood Medical to relocate, launch CommonGood Thrift store in McKinney

Moreno said the origin of the faith-based organization began with a group of pastors looking to support an unhoused community member in need. When the group couldn’t find the health care resources needed locally, they opted to instead create the resource themselves, he said.

CommonGood Medical was founded by the Parks Church in 2016. The clinic, which offers free primary medical care to eligible uninsured and low-income Collin County residents, saw its first patient in 2017 while operating from the Baptist Immigration Center in McKinney.

The organization moved into its current location in the downtown McKinney area in 2019, and has continued to grow within the building to occupy about 4,000 square feet, Moreno said. The clinic currently includes five exam rooms as well as dedicated spaces for lab draws, provider and volunteer workstations, and more. The clinic also offers free lab testing for patients through a partnership with Quest Diagnostics.

While the clinic has medical providers on staff, various medical and non-medical roles are fulfilled by volunteers. One volunteer role at the clinic is a patient advocate, which works alongside providers and nurses to support patients, Moreno said. Patient advocates meet with patients after they see a nurse and provider to help make sure they understand any medical information they were given. They also can direct patients to other community resources they may need such as job training or food pantries.

“Our patient advocates actually keep their notes in the same folder that our medical providers keep their notes, so we treat their emotional and spiritual well-being in the same way that we treat their physical well-being,” Moreno said.

The clinic welcomes all patients regardless of religious affiliation, Moreno said, noting that clinic staff and volunteers look to build relationships with patients.

“We share the practical love of Jesus by providing quality, compassionate care,” he said. “We live out our faith through both word and deed.”

By the numbers

The organization’s growth is tied to increased demand for services, which has driven the need for a larger clinic space, Moreno said.

“60% of our patients said that before coming here, they weren't receiving any [health] care,” Moreno said. “That just speaks volumes to the current gap that exists in the community.”

The clinic saw 72 patients in its first year of operations and has seen continued growth as the organization’s service capacity increased, according to the nonprofit’s 2025 annual impact report.

“Our goal is to be here for people when they need us,” Moreno said. “That's the dream that we're able to be here in that gap that exists, and that when people move beyond that gap, that they know that we're always here if they ever need us again.”

Diving in deeper

The new clinic space, which is slated to open in fall 2026 at 2750 Virginia Parkway, spans about 9,000 square feet.

The clinic will open with the first phase of build-out completed, which will include six exam rooms, Moreno said. Additional phases of build-out are expected to add an on-site imaging center in late 2026 that will offer mammograms, X-rays and sonography.

While imaging will be offered for free to CommonGood Medical patients, the imaging center will also offer services for the public, with proceeds supporting care for the clinic’s patients, Moreno said. Another future expansion is expected to add a space for dental care in 2027, he said. The larger clinic will also include space for optometry and mental health care.

“We anticipate a 30% increase in terms of patient care within the next year to two years ... and that's only going to grow,” Moreno said of the larger clinic facility.

The new clinic is located about 2 miles from the current facility, which keeps the clinic centrally located to the more than 800 patients who reside in McKinney, while the proximity to US 75 provides access for patients who reside in other Collin County cities, Moreno said.

What else?

CommonGood Thrift, the social enterprise arm of the nonprofit organization, is set to launch in McKinney later this year.

Donations for the thrift store, which will be located within McKinney, are now being accepted at the temporary donation center at the future clinic facility, located at 2750 Virginia Parkway, McKinney. Opening of the full thrift store is planned for late 2026, Moreno said.

“To take your junk and not just put it in the trash, but to be able to give it to an organization, to give us the opportunity to sell it, to then turn that into patient care,” Moreno said.

The thrift store also fills a gap in welcoming volunteers looking to serve the organization. While roles within the clinic may require medical training or a larger time commitment to serve as a volunteer, the thrift store can offer additional volunteer opportunities with more flexibility.

“For the first time ever, we're going to get the opportunity to, on a mass scale, be able to bring in volunteers, and then also engage with people that may have never known about us before,” Moreno said.
