City officials celebrated the grand opening of the McKinney Fire Department’s new headquarters campus May 8.
The $53 million campus includes a new fire administration building, logistics center and Fire Station No. 2. The 40,000-square-foot administration building houses the fire department’s assistant chiefs, battalion chiefs, its Emergency Medical Service division and the Fire Marshal’s Office.
“This campus represents how far we’ve come as a fire department and as a city,” Fire Chief Paul Dow said. “But more importantly, it represents where we’re going.”
The 20,000-square-foot logistics building will store department equipment and the new Fire Station No. 2 is replacing a nearly 30-year-old building on West University Drive. Funding for the campus comes from a $75 million bond proposition passed by voters in 2019.
By integrating these facilities into a coordinated campus, officials have created a “more efficient and connected operation,” McKinney City Manager Paul Grimes said. Officials broke ground on the project in 2023.
“Every element of this project was designed to improve day-to-day operations and support the people who use it,” Grimes said. “This is an investment in how we operate, respond and prepare for the future.”
McKinney City Council member Geré Feltus said it was a “proud moment” for the city and thanked everyone who played a part in the project. When residents approved the bond proposition in 2019, they placed their trust in city leaders to “prioritize safety” and “plan ahead for a growing community,” she said.
“This new headquarters campus positions our fire department to meet the demands of today while preparing for the challenges of tomorrow,” Feltus said.
