McKinney City Council members are scheduled to consider and vote on a zoning request for the future Cannon Beach surf resort at an upcoming meeting.
In a nutshell
Council members will consider the zoning request at an April 21 meeting. If approved, more than 58 acres of land at the northeast corner of Stacy Road and SH 121 would be zoned to allow a mix of uses expected at the future surf park.
The zoning case was expected to be presented earlier this month, but McKinney’s Planning and Zoning Commission had to vote on the case again due to an error in the signs posted onsite.
Commission members again voted unanimously April 14 to recommend the zoning change. Nothing about the request had changed since it was last presented in March, City Planner Jake Bennett said during the commission meeting.
Cannon Beach, which broke ground in December, is expected to include a three-acre surf lagoon, lazy river and a mineral hot springs circuit.
The $200 million surf resort, announced in 2024, is being developed by the Cannon Development Group. It’s partnering with the city of McKinney, McKinney Economic Development Corp. and McKinney Community Development Corp.
The surf resort is being developed on 35 acres previously owned by MEDC. MEDC still owns the land located directly east of the future development.
Also on the agenda
City leaders are also kicking off the opportunity for citizens to offer input on McKinney’s next fiscal year budget. Planning is already underway for the city’s fiscal year 2026-27 budget, which is expected to be adopted in September, according to a city document.
Council members will receive an update from city staff on budget planning and input from citizens related to the upcoming budget. It’s the first opportunity this year for citizens to get involved with the budget process, according to the city document.
