Erwin Park, Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary to see controlled burns in February

A prescribed burn is a “planned fire used to meet parkland management objectives,” including removing overcrowded trees, recycling nutrients back into the soil and minimizing plant build-up, according to the McKinney Parks and Recreation Department’s website. Utilizing prescribed burns can help ecosystems to remain healthy, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

“Conducting a prescribed burn is a critical step in maintaining the park’s health and vitality,” Director of Parks and Recreation Amy Kinkade said in the release. “By removing dead undergrowth, we’re creating an environment where new growth can flourish so the park remains a thriving natural space for our residents to enjoy.”

A similar burn is planned for land at the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary on Feb. 13, according to the release.

What else?

Onsite crews will be present to ensure safety during the burn process, and several fire apparatuses will be in the area.

The city is advising residents that there may be visible smoke, but there is no need to report it to emergency services, according to the release.

“This prescribed burn helps reduce the risk of future wildfires by eliminating dry brush and other natural fuels while also enhancing the park’s ecosystem,” Fire Chief Paul Dow said in the release. “It also provides invaluable live-fire training for our firefighters, better preparing them for wildland firefighting.”
