McKinney ISD is launching a new cardiac safety initiative.
As part of Project ADAM, 12 McKinney ISD campuses have received the Heart Safe School designation, according to a July 21 news release.
A closer look
Project ADAM, which stands for Automated Defibrillation in Adam’s Memory, was developed in partnership with Cook Children's Health Care System to prevent sudden cardiac death on school campuses, per the release.
The campuses earned this distinction by establishing designated cardiac emergency response teams, installing automated external defibrillators in visible locations, helping staff members complete CPR and AED trainings, and organizing cardiac event drills, according to the release.
The first 12 campuses to earn this distinction include:
“By standardizing these safety measures, McKinney ISD is actively bridging the gap between a cardiac event and the arrival of emergency medical personnel,” the release states.
The context
Public schools in Texas are preparing for the implementation of Senate Bill 865, passed during the 89th Texas Legislature. This bill requires schools to have standardized cardiac emergency response plans and practice drill procedures, according to the release.
In addition, city officials are working to increase cardiac arrest survival rates in McKinney through the Neighborhood Heroes program. Over the next five years, the McKinney Fire Department plans to intends to place more than 400 AEDs in the hands of trained citizens.
